Scale-dependent bias and the halo model

چکیده
We use a simplified version of the halo model with a power law power spectrum to study scale dependence in galaxy bias at the very large scales relevant to baryon oscillations. In addition to providing a useful pedagogical explanation of the scale dependence of galaxy bias, the model provides an analytic tool for studying how changes in the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) impact the scale dependence of galaxy bias on scales 10 < k−1 < 1000h−1Mpc, which is useful for interpreting the results of complex N-body simulations. We find that changing the mean number of galaxies per halo of a given mass will change the scale dependence of the bias, but that changing the way the galaxies are distributed within the halo has a smaller effect on the scale dependence of bias at large scales. We use the model to explain the decay in amplitude of the baryon oscillations as k increases, and generalize the model to make predictions about scale dependent galaxy bias when redshift space distortions are introduced.

Minimizing the stochasticity of halos in large-scale structure surveys
In recent work (Seljak, Hamaus, and Desjacques 2009) it was found that weighting central halo galaxies by halo mass can significantly suppress their stochasticity relative to the dark matter, well below the Poisson model expectation. This is useful for constraining relations between galaxies and the dark matter, such as the galaxy bias, especially in situations where sampling variance errors ca...
متن کاملOscillating bispectra and galaxy clustering: A novel probe of inflationary physics with large-scale structure
Many models of inflation predict oscillatory features in the bispectrum of primordial fluctuations. Since it has been shown that primordial non-Gaussianity can lead to a scale-dependent halo bias, we investigate the effect of oscillations in the three-point function on the clustering of dark-matter halos. Interestingly, we find that features in the inflaton potential such as oscillations or sha...
متن کاملA nonlinear and biased view of dark matters
Studies of the peculiar velocities of galaxies and clusters of galaxies suggest that much of the matter of the universe is dark. The spatial distribution of light, the galaxies, is most probably not the same as the distribution of the dark matter. I present a very biased view of how these two distributions are related. In this view, galaxies form in gravita-tionally bound dark matter haloes, an...
متن کاملNon-Gaussian Halo Bias Re-examined: Mass-dependent Amplitude from the Peak-Background Split and Thresholding
Recent results of N-body simulations have shown that current theoretical models are not able to correctly predict the amplitude of the scale-dependent halo bias induced by primordial non-Gaussianity, for models going beyond the simplest, local quadratic case. Motivated by these discrepancies, we carefully examine three theoretical approaches based on (1) the statistics of thresholded regions, (...
متن کاملScale-dependent bias induced by local non-Gaussianity: A comparison to N-body simulations
We investigate the effect of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local fNL type on the autoand cross-power spectrum of dark matter haloes using simulations of the ΛCDM cosmology. We perform a series of large N-body simulations of both positive and negative fNL, spanning the range between 10 and 100. Theoretical models predict a scale-dependent bias correction ∆b(k, fNL) that depends on the linear...
